  48.      All of the following text is excerpted from the main
  49. documentation.  All listed cross-references refer to sections in
  50. the main documentation file, RECON201.DOC.

  53. Introduction
  54. ============
  55.  
  56. You will find Recon useful for two overlapping purposes:
  57.  
  58.      1)   As a tool to review TAPCIS downloaded messages from
  59.           within .MSG files that are kept trim and sorted into
  60.           context, and to then generate replies and other ONLINE
  61.           activity.
  62.  
  63.      2)   As a general CompuServe format message file manager
  64.           allowing you to sort, browse, prune, and organize &
  65.           archive CompuServe message files.
  66.  
  67.      Recon can also help organize TAPCIS and the hodge-podge of
  68. TAPCIS add-on programs with its use of an intelligent memory
  69. swapping MENU Shell.

  72. Example CompuServe "sweep"
  73. ==========================
  74.  
  75.      If you are new to TAPCIS and/or CompuServe (or even if you
  76. are not) you may find the following information useful. 
  77. Sequence A is a typical sequence for sweeps of the forums on
  78. CompuServe, this outlines how Recon fits in.
  79.  
  80.      You can generate such a sequence by just running things at
  81. the command line, by using a batch file, or by creating these
  82. entries in the Recon shell MENU. (section 5.1.10)
  83.  
  84. SEQUENCE A:
  85.  
  86.      1)   run TAPCIS, choose N from main menu.  To read new
  87.           message headers, use the "Q" rather than the "R" setting
  88.           for forums, if you do a full read ("R" setting) then
  89.           skip steps 2 & 3.
  90.  
  91.      2)   in TAPCIS, choose M from the main menu, to mark the
  92.           threads you wish to download
  93.  
  94.      3)   in TAPCIS, choose O to download the marked threads 
  95.           (leave "<A>ppend/overwrite msg files" set to Append, and
  96.           "<K>eep outbox file" set to Always)
  97.  
  98.      4)   run Recon in INTERACTIVE mode, view new messages sorted
  99.           into context, generate any replies or other ONLINE
  100.           activity, (section 6.5) then age & resave (section
  101.           6.1.4) each changed file
  102.  
  103.           Messages you wish to keep indefinitely you might save to
  104.           .SAV files (or for example .THD files, or whatever)
  105.  
  106.           So the .MSG files contain ALL RECENT messages, the .SAV
  107.           files contain miscellaneous "interesting" messages, and
  108.           the .THD files contain messages you wish to keep that
  109.           all relate to a specific subject.
  110.  
  111.           The Recon generated .OLD files contain AGEd messages,
  112.           these you may eventually discard, or perhaps copy to
  113.           diskettes for storage.
  114.  
  115.      5)   run TAPCIS, choose O to carry out all the pending ONLINE
  116.           activity created by Recon.
  117.  
  118.      6)   Of course you can also run Recon interactively to look
  119.           up older messages/threads, and to periodically clean
  120.           house.
  121.  
  122. Documentation
  123. =============
  124.  
  125.      MAILER.DOC is an optional quick and handy all-in-one fold up
  126. registration form and envelope, print it by typing:
  127.  
  128.           COPY MAILER.DOC PRN
  129.  
  130.      To register, or to order a printed manual just fill it in,
  131. staple your check INSIDE it, TAPE it closed as shown, (DO NOT USE
  132. STAPLES ON THE EXTERIOR) and stamp and mail it.
  133.  
  134.  
  135.      RECON201.DOC is the installation, tutorial and reference
  136. documentation.  It contains no special formatting commands, can be
  137. viewed with any DOS text file viewer or editor, and it should be
  138. printable on most any printer.
  139.  
  140.      The maximum line width in the document is 68 characters and
  141. it requires no more than 60 lines per page to print.  Though not
  142. strictly necessary, setting your printer to 12 cpi with a 1.5 inch
  143. left margin (on 8.5 inch width paper) should result in a nicely
  144. centered printout.  If you load this document into a word
  145. processor, be careful to allow at least 60 lines/page.
  146.  
  147.      You should have available at least 118 pages of paper.  For a
  148. formfeed paper printer insert the paper and set your printer to
  149. start printing towards the top of the page, ready to print on
  150. approximately the fourth line.  Note that most page printers
  151. (laser, inkjet, or impact with a cut sheet feeder) will by default
  152. begin printing on line 4.  Then type at the DOS command line:
  153.  
  154.          COPY RECON201.DOC PRN
  155.  
  156.      The documentation file includes "box drawings", these use
  157. certain characters which may not be available on some printers. 
  158. Generally such printers replace these special characters with
  159. italicised letters.  If you are able to, choose the "IBM mode" on
  160. such a printer.
  161.  
  162. Quick Installation
  163. ==================
  164.  
  165.      If you ordered a pre-registered copy of Recon on disk, then
  166. the included on-disk RINSTALL utility, after asking a few
  167. questions, will have already automatically installed Recon for
  168. you.
  169.  
  170.      If you downloaded Recon from CompuServe, a BBS, or just got
  171. an evaluation copy from a friend, installing the software is still
  172. quite straightforward.  Just copy RECON.EXE, RECON.OVR and
  173. RECON.HLP into the same directory that contains your TAPCIS.EXE
  174. file and you are ready to go.
  175.  
  176.      You DO NOT need to, and SHOULD NOT erase any information
  177. files (Recon*.DAT, Recon*.SET and Recon*.PCK) that a previous
  178. version may have created.  These contain file time stamp data,
  179. your previous pick lists, and other information useful to Recon.
  180.  
  181.      RECON.OVR contains Recon's overlay files, this reduces the
  182. amount of working memory that Recon requires.  The overlays can
  183. take advantage of EMS memory if you have it available.
  184. (section 4.9)
  185.  
  186.      Even without the RINSTALL utility, you may also optionally
  187. install Recon in any subdirectory, the procedure is described in
  188. the reference section. (section 4.2, 4.13)
  189.  
  190.  
  191.      To run the program just type RECON at the DOS command line,
  192. just like any other program that you run, you must be in the same
  193. directory that RECON.EXE and RECON.OVR were copied into, or that
  194. directory must be on the DOS PATH, or you must use the file's path
  195. in the command line you specify.
  196.  
  197. What's new in 2.01
  198. ==================
  199.  
  200.      My goal is to provide in Recon a one-stop-shopping
  201. environment for message file viewing and processing.
  202.  
  203.      Now in addition, with the introduction of the configurable
  204. shell MENU, Recon can co-ordinate all of your CompuServe/TAPCIS
  205. activities. (section 5.1.10)
  206.  
  207.      Recon can also assist sysops, with the addition of a number
  208. of sysop commands. (appendix 7.8)
  209.  
  210.      Recon now uses EMS for data overflow, this at least doubles
  211. its message file capacity. (appendix 7.1)
  212.  
  213.      This version greatly extends the MESSAGE EDITOR facility, to
  214. allow you to generate NEW messages, even without a message file
  215. loaded, and with popup selection of UserID's and sections.  Also
  216. included is message forwarding, as well as BINARY/ASCII file CMail 
  217. capability. (section 5.5)
  218.  
  219.      Your OUTBOX copy messages are now placed in your .MSG file,
  220. where they are immediately available for reference.  This is the
  221. only way of keeping track of you CMail replies.  These duplicate
  222. copies are of course automatically deleted when you download the
  223. matching CompuServe copy of that message. (section 5.1.7.2)
  224.  
  225.      There are now forum specific settings for AGEing, as well as
  226. other parameters, and all of these can be edited and set
  227. interactively. (section 5.1.6, 5.1.7)
  228.  
  229.      There is a unique new kind of AGEing command, that lets you
  230. keep a more even message file size, even in forums of varying
  231. activity. (section 5.1.7.2)
  232.  
  233.      Recon now accesses and supports TAPCIS' multiple PARAMS
  234. files. (sections 4.6, 5.1.9)
  235.  
  236.      In addition to Copying and Deleting, you can one-step Move
  237. groups of messages. (section 5.3.7)  Groups now also include
  238. sections, and true thread branches. (section 5.3)
  239.  
  240.      A new HOLD setting, will keep a message or group of messages
  241. from being aged, deleted, or moved. (section 5.3.8)
  242.  
  243.      Two new filters, UserID & Branch.  These allow you to get a
  244. better handle on threads, and lets you follow exchanges much
  245. easier. (sections 5.4.2.3, 5.4.2.4)
  246.  
  247.      INTERNET/BITNET (or other long) addresses are handled without
  248. truncation.  Also Recon now recognizes several INTERNET address
  249. formats, and makes proper sorting sense of these.
  250.  
  251.      New automatic scripts include the ability to download a
  252. single message, a thread, a complete thread, or messages on a
  253. given subject. (section 5.5.6)
  254.  
  255.      And to get you up and running more quickly there is context
  256. sensitive hypertext type HELP.
  257.  
  258.      For the first time a printed/bound manual is available by
  259. mail, on registration or upgrade. (section 1.6)

  261. Registration
  262. ============
  263.  
  264.      Recon is copyrighted Shareware, it is NOT PUBLIC DOMAIN, it
  265. is NOT FREE.  If you find Recon of value and continue to use it
  266. after a twenty-one day evaluation period you MUST register your
  267. copy of Recon.

  270.      When you register you receive:

  272.      o  a serial number and license for one copy of Recon
  273.      o  any technical updates of Recon 2.0 available at that time
  274.      o  a printed and bound manual
  275.      o  free bonus standalone utilities (as available)
  276.      o  a greater voice in suggesting future enhancements
  277.      o  the satisfaction of supporting the shareware concept

  280.      If you have not previously registered, and after an
  281. evaluation of Recon you wish to register, or if you would just
  282. like a pre-registered copy to be shipped out to you, the cost is:

  355.      The registration fee licenses one copy of Recon for use on
  356. any one computer at any one time.  You must treat this software
  357. just like a book.  An example is that this software may be used by
  358. any number of people and may be freely moved from one computer
  359. location to another, as long as there is no possibility of it
  360. being used at one location while it's being used at another. 
  361. Consider it like a book, a book cannot be read by two different
  362. people at the same time.

  364.      For commercial users of Recon, site-license or multiple
  365. license discount arrangements may be made by contacting the author
  366. at the above address.

  368.      If there is an unavoidable delay in registering, note that
  369. Recon will continue to work unchanged after the evaluation period.

  371.      Under no circumstances will Recon do any mischief to those
  372. who dishonestly continue to use Recon without registering.
